Sir Alex Ferguson believes United's forwards have really hit form after the Reds scored four goals for the second game running.

Speaking after United demolished Aston Villa 4-1 in their "best performance of the season", the boss acknowledged it had taken a while for his forward line to click into gear.

"I think there's been a disappointment that we haven't scored more goals," said Sir Alex.

"That's a big surprise considering the players we have but Tevez and Anderson missed pre-season so it took them a while to get the fitness needed at this level. Rooney missed the first four games of the season and Ronaldo was suspended, so it's understandable."

Sir Alex believes the goal-shy start to the campaign is well and truly behind United.

"We are delighted, the performance in particular was absolutely superb and I think it's probably our best of the season," he said.

Villa were reduced to nine men when midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker and goalkeeper Scott Carson were sent off. Sir Alex backed both decisions by referee Rob Styles but denied they were decisive moments in the game.

"I don’t think the red cards made a difference to the scoreline but they did give us an easier task. Reo-Coker was unlucky, but he committed two bookable offences as they were both late tackles. You can't afford to do that in the modern game.

"As for Carson being sent off (for bringing down Tevez), there is a lot of sympathy in that situation but the letter of the law says he has to go." Read more...

Manchester United Vs. Wigan Post Match Talk

Ferguson was happy with the way his team coped with the problems.

'Going top (is most pleasing) but we had to win to get there,' he told Sky Sports. 'Considering all the things that happened I think we've done fantastically well.

'I was very pleased with the football in the second half. We had 10 players missing in the end but great credit to all the players who played today.

'We speeded the game up in the second half, the flow of the game was much better.

'There was excellent interplay (between strikers). It's coming together, the understanding comes with that I think.'

On the injuries, Ferguson said: 'Vidic has been taken to hospital with concussion, O'Shea has a dead leg and Louis felt his knee in the warm-up. You can't risk that.'

Wigan counterpart Chris Hutchings was left to rue a second-half collapse.

'We had a game plan and it worked very, very well in the first 45 minutes,' he said.

'But as soon as they got the first goal they upped the tempo and could probably have had a couple more.

'It's always difficult but while it's 1-0 you have always got a chance. I'm disappointed that as the game went on, we lost our shape.' Read more...

Ferguson hailed the Frenchman's impact and told Setanta 1: 'We have missed him. We're delighted to have him back as we got the win today.

'He has come through fine, having been out for such a long time you're always aware that type of injury can come back again.'

Ferguson added: 'In the first half I thought the passing was far too slow, although the possession was comfortable we were not making chances and it is difficult when teams come here and line up the way they do.'

Ferguson admitted his youthful attacking quartet had struggled to gel.

'We started with a front four who had never played together before, it was new for them so there was a lack of understanding, quite naturally,' he said

Ferguson said: 'At the time they protested so much I thought it was a penalty, but when I've seen it (it was not) and Wes has said it has hit him on the chest. It does hit him on the chest, I'm sure of that.'

Asked for his thoughts on the game, he added: 'Narrow margin, touch and go, nothing to choose between two sides.

'I knew it was going to be almost a war of attrition in the second half.

'They dug in and got forward a bit. There was really nothing in it in the second half.

'(With the goal) I think Carlos Tevez touching the ball decided it.'

Ferguson admitted his relief at finally claiming the first victory of the season.

'I thought we lacked a little bit of confidence. Players are anxious, there is a lot of expectation here, there are new players here,' he said.

'It was a reasonable performance from us. What was required was to dig in, show great commitment.

'Tottenham are in the wrong position just as ourselves. The expectation level for both sides is very high.' Read more...
