Rio Ferdinand admits that United's gameplan of going straight for the kill reaped spectacular dividends against Dynamo Kyiv.
The imperious centre-back opened the scoring inside 10 minutes, setting United on their way to a thumping 4-2 win in the Ukrainian capital which puts the Reds on the brink of the Champions League knockout stages.
"We planned to win this one and we did it," said Rio. "A good start was vital for us and we scored two quick goals. "Perhaps you could think that Dynamo would not recover and we may have felt this."
United's defence resolve wavered briefly just after the half-hour as Diogo Rincon took advantage of slack marking to halve the arrears, but Cristiano Ronaldo struck before half-time to effectively end the contest.
"We allowed them a way back into the game from a set-piece, which is quite uncharacteristic of us," said Ferdinand. "But as you have seen, we have restored our lead quickly and we never looked like giving anything more to Kyiv.
"We had to work hard today because there were a lot of long balls coming into the area. I think we did well at the back and they had to attack at a slower pace or stick to the wings."
