Stapleton: Nothing to choose

Ex-United and Arsenal striker Frank Stapleton admits there is little to choose between his two former sides ahead of their clash at the Emirates Stadium.

The Irishman is convinced that, unlike other high-profile matches, Saturday's huge encounter will be an unabashed feast of attacking football.

"With these so-called 'matches of the season' you get asked: 'Is it going to be cagey?' It isn't a case of even considering that on this occasion,"Stapleton told the Manchester Evening News.

"You just know there are going to be goals and it will be an open football match. It certainly won't be 0-0. It cannot really be anything else the way United and Arsenal are playing."

With no visible chinks in either side's armour, Stapleton concedes that neither team has a distinct advantage over the other.

"It really is hard to split them at this time," he admitted. "I look through every department of both teams and there is nothing in it.

"You think of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in United's defence and how well they are playing but then Arsenal have Kolo Toure and William Gallas not conceding many.

"In midfield, despite United's injury problems they still have Anderson coming to the fore and now Owen Hargreaves back plus wingers like Ronaldo, Giggs and Nani.

"Then you look at Arsenal's engine-room and you have Cesc Fabregas in sensational form scoring plenty of goals as well.

"Up front, Arsenal have Emmanuel Adebayor and others weighing in while United have Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney on fire. It is fascinating. It is maybe up front where United might have the edge."

Stapleton feels that, contrary to previous years, Arsenal have the wherewithal to enter into a physical battle with Sir Alex Ferguson's side, if required.

"United and Arsenal play wonderful football," he said. "That's how United won the title last season and it is how Arsenal have got to the top this campaign. I don't see either side ditching that to get involved in anything.

"But the one thing that I think hasn't been noticed too much about Arsenal this season because of the great football they are playing is that they don't lie down like last season. Last year they were bullied out of too many matches. They were too nice as players. But I think they have added steel to their game.

"United have always had steel about them. I think that aggression from United in the past has given them the edge in these games.

"But I don't think Saturday is going to be a day when that is going to be called upon too much. I think the entertainment value at the Emirates is going to be excellent." Read more...

Rio gets green light

Manchester United have confirmed Rio Ferdinand will be available for Saturday's crunch Premier League showdown with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Despite being named captain, Ferdinand was substituted during last weekend's 4-1 win over Middlesbrough, apparently uninjured. But, in a statement, the Red Devils claimed that the England defender will face the Gunners this weekend as they look to open up a three-point lead at the top of the table. It is good news for Sir Alex Ferguson, who yesterday saw midfielder Paul Scholes ruled out for three months after being forced to undergo knee surgery. However, with Owen Hargreaves returning to duty on Saturday and both Michael Carrick and Gary Neville set to make their comebacks after recent lay-offs, it does appear United's early season injury problems are easing.

Owen salutes fellow newcomers

Owen Hargreaves is full of praise for how his fellow new signings have overcome language barriers to adapt to life at United.

The England midfielder is the only English-speaking new arrival this summer, while Nani, Anderson and Carlos Tevez are still learning the club’s mother tongue.

Despite the potential for communication difficulties, the trio have all settled into life around Carrington, and the Reds’ season has burst spectacularly into life in recent weeks.

“Nani, Anderson and Carlos don’t speak a lot of English, but I think they fit in extremely well, get along with everyone very well and they’ve been fabulous,” he told MUTV.

“Carlos, this month, has been exceptional, his work rate is great and he and Wazza compliment each other very well. As long as we’re scoring goals and winning games, I think everyone’s happy.”

Hargreaves made his fourth appearance for the club against Middlesbrough last weekend, and he admits that it can be hard to maintain his discipline while surrounded by the perpetual motion of the Reds’ attacking talent.

“At times you want to get involved,” he conceded. “My job is to keep it simple and protect the back four, but you kind of get sucked in because everyone’s running around you!” Read more...

Boss ready for key clash

Sir Alex Ferguson admits Saturday's trip to the Emirates Stadium could be a key clash in this season's Barclays Premier League title race.

Table-topping Arsenal and second-placed United are separated by just goals scored going into the match, with both sides in top form.

Having seen the Reds score four times in four consecutive matches, however, Sir Alex is confident that his side are facing the leaders at the right time.

"Everything is coming together, as I thought it would, and in good time to take on Arsenal in what could be a key match in our title defence," he is quoted as telling the Daily Star.

"It's still an open race but Arsenal have had a great start and they're the ones we are chasing at the moment. The main thing is I know we will chase them with great fervour and determination."

Arsene Wenger's side have confounded their critics this season with some superb displays en route to leading the pack, and Sir Alex admits they are genuine contenders for United's crown.

"I know challenging for a title is a new experience for a lot of their players, but some of them have been there before and the manager has, and that is a big help," he said.

"People said the same about us last year, but we led the league for three-quarters of the season, so I don't think it's a handicap." Read more...

Rio fit to face Arsenal

United have confirmed that Rio Ferdinand is fit to face Arsenal on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium.

Reports in Tuesday’s press claimed that the Reds defender has experienced a recurrence of an old groin injury and would miss the key Premier League clash.

However, the influential 28-year-old centre-back trained with the rest of the squad at Carrington on Tuesday, and is considered fully fit and ready to play against the Gunners. Read more...

Webb's the right ref for Saturday

Howard Webb's appointment as referee for United's crunch match at Arsenal has come under fire from a former top official.

Recently retired referee Graham Poll is concerned that Webb will be taking charge of his second Arsenal game in a row, following the Gunners' 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

"Never before have you seen a referee in the Premier League get appointed to the same team in consecutive weeks," said Poll.

"It doesn't happen. There are all sorts of connotations with it. Is Howard Webb going to have to prove his impartiality and will that mean he is going to favour Manchester United?

"It's unfair pressure on a very good referee."

The Premier League has defended Webb's appointment, insisting his recent performances in matches like Arsenal's trip to Liverpool and Germany's Euro 2008 qualifier against Czech Republic make him the best man for Saturday's job at the Emirates.

A spokesman for the Premier League said: "Howard Webb is the best performing referee at the moment and it's only right he takes charge of the highest-profile games."

South Yorkshire-based Webb has refereed one United match so far this season, the 1-0 home win over Tottenham in August. His appointments last season included the Reds' 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford and the FA Cup semi-final against Watford. Read more...

Ron: We'll win Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo says Manchester United have all the ingredients to retain their Premier League title AND win this season’s Champions League. The Portuguese winger has smashed six goals already this season to help United go second in the top flight and win the first three games of their Euro campaign. And he said: “I believe we’ll win the Premier League and Champions League this season. We have the team, we have the players and we believe we can do it. There’s a good chance we will."

Knee op rules Scholes out for three months

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes will have a knee operation on Thursday and is expected to be out of action for three months.

The 32-year-old reported the injury during training prior his side's Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Friday a first scan proved inconclusive - but a second examination today has confirmed ligament damage, meaning Scholes will now be out of action until February.

It is a big blow for Scholes, and also for United, even though the return of Owen Hargreaves for Saturday's Premier League win over Middlesbrough and the imminent return to training of Michael Carrick - who dislocated an elbow against Roma earlier this month - negate the impact slightly.

For over a decade, Scholes has been one of the mainstays of Ferguson's side and his unerring ability to produce goals at vital times has aided many of the Red Devils trophy successes down the years.

He had already made an amazing comeback from career-threatening eye surgery to play a major part in last season's title triumph and while he had only scored once in 12 appearances so far this term, few were discounting him as a massive influence on the current campaign.

Although there were early rumours of a three-month absence, United officials felt they were not in a position to confirm the bad news until a second examination had taken place.

It means the former England star - who has rejected two comeback calls from national boss Steve McClaren - will miss a minimum of 13 Premier League games, starting with Saturday's visit to Arsenal and including the crucial trip to Liverpool on December 16, plus the start of United's FA Cup campaign.

However, Ferguson will be delighted to note Scholes should be back in action - and hopefully fresh - when his side resume their Champions League quest at the knockout stage towards the end of February. Read more...

Van Der Sar to quit Oranje after Euro 2008

Manchester United and Holland goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar has revealed his intention to quit international football after Euro 2008.

Van der Sar, who turned 37 on Monday, made his Oranje debut in June 1995 against Belarus and has since racked up 121 caps for his country.

The former Juventus and Ajax keeper said: 'I will stop with with the Oranje after Euro 2008. The time has come.'

Holland still require one win from their remaining Euro 2008 qualifiers against minnows Luxembourg and Belarus to qualify for next summer's finals in Austria and Switzerland.

Van der Sar is out of contract at United at the end of the season. Read more...

Wenger issues Reds warning

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists his side go into Saturday's showdown with United on the crest of a wave, following Sunday's draw with Liverpool.

The Gunners dominated at Anfield, but needed a late Cesc Fabregas equaliser to claim a deserved point. Wenger insists that, having come through their first major test of the season unscathed, Arsenal are ready for another challenge this weekend.

"We have come out of our first big test this season stronger," he told Sky Sports. "We played without the handbrake on, without any restrictions and we were faithful to the game we wanted to play.

"I cannot fault anyone, it was a fantastic game. Manchester United is another big test, but after this performance we will be facing United much stronger."

Sunday's point took Arsenal back ahead of United at the summit of the Barclays Premier League table on goals scored, and Wenger insists his side have already proven their worth as genuine title contenders.

"I have always been very confident of what we could achieve this season," he said. "I said it before the season started and now we have convinced a few more people. There is a long way to go, but we have the talent to fight right at the top for the Championship." Read more...

Owen: Best yet to come

Despite United’s recent blistering form, midfielder Owen Hargreaves has warned the Reds’ title rivals that there is still plenty more to come.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side swept aside Middlesbrough on Saturday, scoring four goals for a fourth successive match, but Hargreaves insists that there is still room for improvement in the Reds’ game.

“We look good, our offensive play is very good,” he told MUTV. “But we have some things we can work on, even going forward. We had some wonderful moments (against Boro) but at times we were a bit complacent.

“We could have, if we’d wanted, scored more goals so we have some things we can work on, and that’s a great thing. We’re winning comfortably and we’re not even hitting top gear yet.”

United travel to Arsenal on Saturday in a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash, with only goals scored separating the two teams, and Hargreaves is confident the Reds can take advantage of having no midweek fixture to thoroughly prepare for their trip to the Emirates.

“We’ve got some time to focus and look at some tape of Arsenal and look at what they do well,” said the midfielder.

“They’ve played extremely well and played some good football, but I still think that we’re the top team in England. It’ll be a fabulous game for the fans to enjoy, but I think we’ll be very confident going into the game.” Read more...

Sir Alex in Ronaldo rant

Alex Ferguson fears Cristiano Ronaldo may fall victim to football’s hatchet men. And the Manchester United boss believes opposition crowds are turning refs against his winger. Ferguson said: “I am worried too many defenders are pursuing a policy of stopping Ronaldo by fair means or foul. Some of the tackles on him have been ridiculous this season. I don’t mean defenders should let him through, but I do expect refs to protect him more. I expect opposition fans to boo our man but I don’t expect refs to be influenced by the hostility. Special players like Ronaldo, whom fans want to see play, need to be encouraged rather than kicked out of the game.”

Boss salutes 'amazing' Reds

Sir Alex was delighted with United's fourth four-goal haul in as many matches, but admitted the Reds almost let Middlesbrough back into the game.

Nani fired United into the lead in the third minute, only for former Arsenal forward Jeremie Aliadiere to equalise three minutes later.

"For weeks people were going on about our 1-0 wins but now they're going on about us scoring four. It's amazing!" the manager told MUTV. "Some of the attacking play today was very good, although when we got in front we took our foot off the pedal. We started running with the ball, didn't play the way we normally play and paid the penalty.

"We weren't getting to the ball quick enough and I think the players really needed a wake-up call, and that's exactly what their goal did to us. Credit to Middlesbrough for that 20-minute period where they got in and about us."

Gareth Southgate's side may have made things difficult for the Reds in the first half, but the second period was all United and the match ended 4-1.

"There was no doubt we were on top in the second half," Sir Alex agreed. "There was far more concentration, our attacking play improved and we could have scored a lot of goals."

The boss was particularly impressed with Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney, who linked superbly for United's third.

"I think that goal sums up their partnership. It was all about quick-thinking, great vision and, you know, the courage to even try that. Wayne could have taken another touch but he knew Tevez was making that run and a little backheel put him in on goal. It was a fantastic goal and hopefully we're going to see a more complete partnership." Read more...

Super Nani shines

Sir Alex's decision to plump for Nani ahead of Ryan Giggs on Saturday paid dividends for the United boss, with the Portuguese wonder-kid lighting up the Reds' 4-1 win over Middlesbrough.

Nani kick-started the goal spree with a long-range missile in the third minute… after coming in off the left wing and beating three Boro defenders.

"He doesn't score tap-ins," Sir Alex joked on MUTV. "He's a thunderbolt-hitter. It was a fantastic goal and Nani's coming along very nicely. I thought it would be refreshing to use him today instead of Ryan Giggs. I've got next Saturday to think about [so I rested Ryan] but Nani came on and had a good impact."

The 20-year-old had a hand in most of the Reds' meaningful attacks, particularly in the first half, and his contribution didn't escape striker Wayne Rooney.

"He came in today and did really well," Rooney said. "His goal was a great strike – it bent and dipped all over the place."

Nani's two United goals have both come at Old Trafford, and both with the scores locked at 0-0. Read more...

Clever Carlos wins Wayne's heart

Wayne Rooney heaped praise on strike partner Carlos Tevez after United's summer signing notched twice in the Reds' 4-1 win over Middlesbrough.

Nani and Rooney found the net before half-time before Tevez rocked the visitors with a further two goals in the second half.

"Playing with Carlos is brilliant," Rooney told MUTV. "He's a clever player, very intelligent, and I think we both work well together. We've both been scoring a few goals lately so we're pleased with that."

Rooney and Tevez shone throughout the match, with the crowning moment arriving in the 55th minute when Tevez fired home after collecting a sumptuous return pass from the England international.

"The best way to play football is pass and move and as soon as Carlos gave me the ball I could see him starting his run out of the corner of my eye. He got on the end of my backheel and I'm delighted for him to have scored two today. He's worked very hard over the last two games and he deserves those goals."

Rooney's also been among the goals recently and has scored six in the Reds' last five matches.

"I know it's my job to score goals and I try and score in every game I play. I'm happy with how things are going and I'm hoping that can continue.

"To play in this team is an honour. We're playing fast, attacking football and that's the football I want to be involved in." Read more...

Hargreaves glad to be back

Injury has ravaged Owen Hargreaves' start to life as a United player, so it's little surprise that he savoured every second of Saturday's win over Middlesbrough.

The England midfielder played 65 minutes of United's 4-1 victory, and turned in another typically combative performance on only his fourth Reds appearance.

"It’s been very stop and start," Owen told MUTV. "You just want to get involved, it’s great to get back in the team and have a game, especially when the game is won.

"I’ve been out for quite some time, so I’m a bit sore, a bit stiff, but those things are part and parcel when you’ve been out. We’ve got a few days before the Arsenal game, so we’ll try and do things right so that I’m fit."

Hargreaves' injury absence has been an unusual one, with recurring knee problems, and he makes no attempt to hide his frustration at being repeatedly sidelined.

"It’s been frustrating because I’ve really had it since the end of last season," he said. "I’ve spoken to a lot of doctors and specialists, and they’ve explained to me that it’s not really a problem with the knee, it’s a structural problem with the biomechanics.

"For some reason my body’s not happy with the way it is, so you need insoles and things to correct that. I’ve been trying to get round it and find the answer because I don’t want to miss any games, I want to be fit for the rest of the season." Read more...

Manchester United Vs. Middlesbrough Match Report

Middlesbrough have traditionally held something of a hoodoo over United at Old Trafford, but even they couldn't do anything to prevent another vibrant attacking display from Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Goals from Nani, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez (twice) invalidated an early equaliser from Jeremie Aliadiere and put United on top of the Barclays Premier League, ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Liverpool on Sunday.

Following on from convincing victories over Wigan, Aston Villa and Dynamo Kyiv, the scoreline also marked a fourth-consecutive four-goal haul, equalling a club record set back in the 1907/08 season.

The only noteworthy change to Sir Alex Ferguson’s line-up saw Owen Hargreaves return for only his fourth United appearance, his first taste of action since the victory over Sunderland on September 1.

Whereas Boro traditionally come to Old Trafford with a stifling approach clearly at the fore, Gareth Southgate’s 4-4-2 formation suggested the potential for an open game, and the early goal bore that out in style.

The deadlock was broken inside three minutes as Nani picked the ball up on the left flank, just inside the Boro half. The Portuguese winger beat three defenders, cut inside and sent goalwards a scorching 30-yard drive which arced over the flailing Schwarzer.

Less than two minutes later, Carlos Tevez could have doubled the Reds’ lead. The Argentine striker was sent clean through, but his attempt to lift the ball over Schwarzer was thwarted by the Australian stopper.

United would rue that miss moments later as the visitors drew level. Turkish striker Tuncay, who scored a hat-trick for Fenerbahce in his last appearance against the Reds, did superbly to outfox John O’Shea and send in a cross, which Aliadiere glanced in off van der Sar’s far post.

The Turk proved troublesome again after 24 minutes, arcing in another fine cross which Stewart Downing headed wastefully past the far post. Boro were by no means bossing the game, but they were certainly proving a handful on the counter-attack.

United, as per, were enjoying the lion’s share of possession, and responded to Downing’s near-miss with one of their own, as Ronaldo latched onto Rooney’s pass and sent a left-footed shot skidding just past Schwarzer’s post.

Downing was heavily involved again as United retook the lead after 32 minutes. The England international dwelled on the ball inside his own area and, as he attempted to pass clear, Nani nicked the ball to Rooney, who hammered a shot past Schwarzer and in.

The Australian was called into action again moments later as United sought to extend their lead. A spell of heavy pressure ended with O’Shea sliding the ball back to Ronaldo, whose low sidefooted effort was held by Schwarzer.

United seemed liberated by the chance to savour their advantage, and they continued to pile the pressure on Boro’s goal, coming agonizingly close to scoring a third in first-half injury time.

A defensive slip allowed Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo to break against just one Boro defender, but Rooney’s overhit pass to Tevez was half-cleared to Nani. In the ensuing melee, the winger’s cross fell invitingly to Ronaldo, but the ball merely bounced off him and ricocheted straight to Schwarzer.

The lead stayed at just the one goal going into the break, but it could easily have been extended further within a minute of the restart as Tevez fed Rooney, but the England striker could only fire narrowly over the crossbar with a diagonal shot.

Much had been made of the burgeoning English-Argentine partnership upfront after their prominent role against Aston Villa and Dynamo Kyiv, and they combined again to devastating effect to put United 3-1 ahead.

Tevez flicked a long ball straight to Rooney and continued his run into the box. Tevez then slipped below radar as he crept into the box, but Rooney was able to find him with a sumptuous back-heel, which teed up the Argentine for a simple slid finish.

Parallels have been drawn between the infamous Cole-Yorke partnership and the current Tevez-Rooney pairing of late, and this goal was the most glaring sign of similarity yet. The duo’s interplay immediately evoked memories of Cole’s much-heralded 1998 goal against Barcelona, scored with similarly intuitive front-play.

With a two-goal lead established, Sir Alex opted to bring on Darren Fletcher and Gerard Pique for some much-needed playing time, as they replaced Hargreaves and Ferdinand respectively.

Ryan Giggs also replaced Anderson after another impressive display from the young Brazilian, but there was no disruption to United’s attacking flow, and they grabbed a fourth goal with five minutes remaining.

Rooney broke from deep inside his own half and left Cattermole trailing in his wake before picking out Tevez, who cut inside and, although his goal-bound shot struck Taylor’s arm, it bounced down into the ground and past the hapless Schwarzer.

Manchester United Vs. Middlesbrough Match Preview

Manchester United rookie Danny Simpson admits he is living a dream just now. The Salford-born full-back feared the worst when his first senior start for United ended up in a shock Carling Cup defeat to Coventry. It was a loss which forced Sir Alex Ferguson into a U-turn on his policy to keep all the Red Devils' young stars at Old Trafford, rather than loan them out as has been his practice in recent seasons.

However, almost immediately, the Scot made it clear Simpson, who spent periods at Royal Antwerp and Sunderland last term, would not be among those departing. Instead, the 20-year-old has remained with the club he has supported all his life. And, after making his Premier League debut against Wigan immediately before the international break, Simpson was handed his first experience of Champions League combat during Tuesday night's 4-2 triumph over Dynamo Kiev in the Ukraine.

In between, he was an unused substitute at Aston Villa. An update on the fitness of Paul Scholes, who had a scan on a knee problem on Wednesday and Patrice Evra, who pulled out of the Kiev win after suffering a calf strain in the warm-up, is not expected until Friday.

But with injuries continuing to bite deep into Ferguson's resources, it would now be a surprise if Simpson was not involved in some capacity as United look to leapfrog Arsenal and reach the top of the table by beating Middlesbrough at Old Trafford on Saturday.

I can't quite believe what is happening at the moment,'' said Simpson. ``I just seem to be walking around with a big smile on my face all the time. ``After the Coventry game, I was worried and disappointed just like everyone else.

``I did have a chat with the manager but he has shown a lot of faith in me, which is a big boost for my confidence.'' That Simpson survived the post-Coventry cull - when fellow right-back Phil Bardsley did not - says something in itself, although the fact Roy Keane was desperate to have the player back at Sunderland this season following their promotion to the top flight was a clear indication of his talent.

And, while it would have been easy for Simpson to dwell on what went wrong against Coventry, instead he adopted a more positive approach, which seems to be paying dividends. ``Everyone suffers disappointments,'' he reflected. ``It is part of football.

The best thing to do was get over it quickly, keep working hard and then see what develops from there. ``You have to forget about these things. If you dwell on them, it just means your next performance will probably be poor as well, which is the last thing you need. It is better to get it out of your system, so the day after the game was the last day I spent worrying about it.''

Now fully recovered from a double hernia operation, Simpson knows he could be one of the major beneficiaries should United seal their place in the knock-out phase of the Champions League with two games to spare by beating Dynamo in the return clash at Old Trafford on November 7.

Victory would enable Ferguson to use fringe players in the final matches against Sporting Lisbon and Roma, in the Stadio Olimpico, offering priceless experience Simpson knows he could not get anywhere else. ``A minute playing for United is worth 10 anywhere else,'' he said. ``The experience I am gaining now will go a long way to helping me in the future. ``I feel really good at the moment. The manager knows I am there if he needs me and I am chuffed to bits at the fact he is using me.'' Read more...

O'Shea revels in Kyiv romp

John O'Shea feels United's romp in Kyiv has to rank among one of the best European away performances in his time at the club.

The Reds brushed aside the Ukrainian champions on their own patch, and the versatile Irishman has been delighted with United's improved away form in Europe.

"I think it's up there with one of our best away performances in Europe," he said. "I played against Juventus (where United won 3-0 in 2003) it was a joy to be involved in that.

"But games like this, where you are comfortable from start to finish, do not come along too often in Europe. We must make sure we get a few more."

Victory in Kyiv puts United on the brink of reaching the knockout phases of the Champions League. Having been in an identical position last year and only just won through, however, O'Shea is aware of the need to finish the job as soon as possible.

"The manager has reminded us we won our first three games in the group stage last year as well," he revealed. "The key is to finish as strongly as we have started.

"We have two home games to come now. We are in a strong position but we have to make sure there are no more slip-ups and we finish top of the group." Read more...

Rooney: We Can Rule Europe

Wayne Rooney is confident that United have the wherewithal to win the UEFA Champions League this season.

Despite a host of major injuries, Tuesday night's victory in Kyiv put the Reds firmly in control of Group F with three wins from three games, and on the brink of sealing an early berth in the knockout stages.

"We've got a few injuries at the moment - a lot of key players missing - but we have a good squad and we know we're capable of winning this competition," Rooney told ITV1 after the win in Kyiv.

"We play Kyiv again in a couple of weeks - and if we win we'll be through. I hope there's a lot more to come - because after a poor start to the season, we're doing really well."

The England striker found the net for the fourth straight United match, and he admits he is revelling in his burgeoning strike partnership with Carlos Tevez.

After a few games spent building their understanding, the pair combined to devastating effect against Wigan, Aston Villa and Dynamo Kyiv - bagging five goals between them in those three matches.

"It (the partnership) is really good," Rooney said. "Carlos, I thought, was brilliant (against Kyiv). His work-rate and his touches were great. We're gelling really well, and I hope that can continue." Read more...

Scholes blow for United

Manchester United fear they could be without Paul Scholes for their Premier League clash with Arsenal in 10 days' time. Scholes was forced to pull out of United's Champions League match with Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday after suffering a knee injury in training. Scholes had a hospital scan yesterday, and Sir Alex Ferguson met with his medical staff this morning to decide the best course of action. It is feared Scholes may need a cartilage operation.

Boss salutes Reds' attack

Boss salutes Reds' attack

Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for his side's attacking verve after the Reds ran riot against Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday evening.

Goals by Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo (2) saw United score four times for the third successive match, and maintained their perfect start to Group F.

"The attacking play was excellent," Sir Alex told ITV. "You can’t ask for better than that. We could have scored a lot of goals, but all in all I’ve got to be pleased with that result."

The blow of losing Paul Scholes and Patrice Evra to injury disrupted the Boss' pre-match plans, but he was particularly pleased by his side's adaptability in their absence.

"What’s pleasing is that, no matter which side we’re playing, they’re adapting, they’re getting on with it," he said. "They’re not worrying about what formation we’re playing or what team we’re playing because they’ve all got the ability and there’s a great team spirit about the place, and I think that’s important in the situation we’re in at the moment."

United now have nine points from three games. Despite occupying a similarly promising position last season, it took victory in the final group game to seal progress - although Sir Alex doesn't envisage a repeat this term.

"We made changes which didn’t work, went to Copenhagen then lost to Celtic when we should have won, then we ended up having to win the last game," he said. "But this team is more mature now." Read more...

United 'simply tremendous'

United are good enough to challenge on all fronts this season, according to Red legend and MUTV commentator Paddy Crerand.

Crerand, a member of United's 1968 European Cup-winning side, said the Reds' performance in Kyiv was as good as, if not better than, the sparkling 4-1 win at Villa Park last Saturday.

"I thought United played exceptionally well against Dynamo Kyiv," Crerand told MUTV.

"People will turn around and say Kyiv weren't particularly good, but I think they weren't that good because United were simply tremendous.

"United played very well and deserved the victory. In fact, they could have scored seven or eight goals tonight.

"Unfortunately Paul Scholes picked up a knock during training on Monday and we also have Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves injured. But if we can get those three midfielders back in the side sooner rather than later, United are going to be a threat across every trophy."

Ironically, Brazilian playmaker Anderson, singled out for praise by Crerand, may not have figured in Sir Alex's starting XI had that midfield trio been fit.

"Anderson played tremendously well. What a great experience that would have been for the young kid. He was fantastic at Aston Villa on Saturday and he played exceptionally well again in Kyiv.

"It was his first game in Europe, and away from home as well. He wasn't able to do much pre-season training as he picked up an injury against Doncaster but now he has a few competitive games under his belt and we're seeing what he's capable of." Read more...

Giggs lauds Reds' form

United are steadily improving as the season unfolds, Ryan Giggs warned after the Reds' emphatic 4-2 victory against Dynamo Kyiv.

Aside from September's Carling Cup defeat to Coventry, United have now won 10 straight matches and, more worryingly for opponents, the goals have started flowing again, with 12 plundered in the Reds' last three outings.

"We dominated this match because today we were stronger as a team and individually," said Giggs. "Maybe the home side were a bit unlucky because we are in very good form.

"Dynamo are not an easy team to play and they've shown it, but if you take our season we're improving constantly."

United are now on the brink of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages, but Giggs has called for the Reds to maintain their fine form and ensure qualifcation by beating Kyiv again in a fortnight.

"I think that we are close to qualifying early," said the veteran winger. "But for this we need to play as well at home as we did today." Read more...

Rio: We went for the kill

Rio Ferdinand admits that United's gameplan of going straight for the kill reaped spectacular dividends against Dynamo Kyiv.

The imperious centre-back opened the scoring inside 10 minutes, setting United on their way to a thumping 4-2 win in the Ukrainian capital which puts the Reds on the brink of the Champions League knockout stages.

"We planned to win this one and we did it," said Rio. "A good start was vital for us and we scored two quick goals. "Perhaps you could think that Dynamo would not recover and we may have felt this."

United's defence resolve wavered briefly just after the half-hour as Diogo Rincon took advantage of slack marking to halve the arrears, but Cristiano Ronaldo struck before half-time to effectively end the contest.

"We allowed them a way back into the game from a set-piece, which is quite uncharacteristic of us," said Ferdinand. "But as you have seen, we have restored our lead quickly and we never looked like giving anything more to Kyiv.

"We had to work hard today because there were a lot of long balls coming into the area. I think we did well at the back and they had to attack at a slower pace or stick to the wings." Read more...

Dynamo Kiev Vs. Manchester United Match Result

Centre back Rio Ferdinand opened the scoring, but United's frontline ran riot in Kyiv during a free-flowing and frenetic Group F encounter.

Despite pre-match predictions of a tight tussle likely to be settled by a single strike, the net bulged six times in the Ukraine capital as Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo enjoyed the freedom of the Olympiyskiy Stadium's vast pitch.

Dynamo Kyiv did score two of the six goals, but never seriously threatened United's stranglehold on a third successive Champions League victory. The win leaves the Reds with maximum points so far in this season's competition and the opportunity to secure group qualification when Kyiv travel to Manchester in a fortnight.

United's first-half performance was as good as any European display in recent memory, with the Reds carving out a number of chances in the first half-hour. With Kyiv desperate for a win and manager Jozsef Szabo adopting a three-pronged strikeforce, United found gaps aplenty in the home side's defensive armour.

Szabo's tactics left Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo with boundless space in which to operate and it was the Reds' no.7 who looked most menacing in the game's early stages. Tiberiu Ghioane decided the easiest way to halt the 22-year-old was illegally, but his 9th minute foul on the Portuguese winger ultimately led to United's opener.

Giggs curled the resulting free-kick teasingly into the space in front of Kyiv goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy, who remained rooted to his line. Instead, Rio Ferdinand, who scored the Reds' third at Villa Park on Saturday, met the ball early to thump home a header and send United into the lead.

It must have been tempting for Sir Alex to then issue stifling instructions to his troops, but United continued to push forward in search of a second goal. It duly arrived on 18 minutes when Ronaldo fed Wes Brown on the right hand side of the penalty area. Kyiv's Goran Gavrancic slid in to intercept Brown's first-time cross but could only divert the ball into Rooney's path, who found the net for a simple tap-in.

It was Rooney's fifth goal in his last four United appearances and no less than the Reds deserved. Sir Alex's European sides are often criticised for a lack of attacking ambition but the manager's decision to attack Kyiv so early must surely be applauded.

Indeed, United would have killed off the game a minute later had Rooney or Tevez been able to get onto the end of yet another searching Ronaldo ball. The front two then went close again when Rooney stung Shovkovskiy's palms before Tevez's shot from the rebound was bravely blocked.

Such frenetic pace could never be sustained and the match slowed, albeit marginally, until the Ukrainians pulled a goal back on 34 minutes. Anderson did well defensively to break up a rare foray into the penalty area but Diogo Rincon gave John O'Shea the slip at the resulting corner and headed home unmarked from 10 yards.

It was a poor goal to concede from United's point of view, although the Reds almost restored the two-goal advantage immediately when Cristiano Ronaldo forced Shovkovskiy into a smart save down to his right. The Reds were on the march and John O'Shea missed a gilt-edged opportunity five minutes before the break when he miscued a shot from six-yards after good work on the right from Wayne Rooney.

A third United goal did arrive before half-time and again it was Ryan Giggs who provided a telling cross from the left flank. This time it was Ronaldo in the middle and, although he was unmarked, there was still a lot of work to do. Indeed, the no.7 was forced to back-pedal quickly before leaping to direct his header beyond Shovkovskiy and into the corner of the net.

The half-time whistle provided both players and fans a chance to draw breath (but not before the Reds fashioned another chance, which Rooney blasted narrowly over the top) and inevitably the second half was slightly more subdued.

But only just. The major difference was that now the team in white were fashioning the better chances, although United's defence, marshalled superbly by Rio Ferdinand, denied the home side again and again.

Rincon saw a glancing header go just wide on 52 minutes before Carlos Correa's free-kick curled around the wall and narrowly past van der Sar's left-hand post. It did send a scare through United's travelling support, as did Nemanja Vidic when he looked to have brought down Kyiv substitute Artem Milevskiy inside the area. But Hungarian referee Viktor Kassai blew for a foul the other way and a relieved United side restarted the match.

Kassai was under the spotlight again seven minutes later when Goran Gavrancic was adjudged to have handled the ball… initially on the edge of his area. After consultation with his assistant, however, the man in the middle pointed to the penalty spot, where Ronaldo coolly sent the hapless Shovkovskiy the wrong way to notch United's fourth and effectively seal the win.

Kyiv, rooted to the bottom of Group F and with nothing to lose, weren't about to surrender and Bangoura doubled the home side's tally with a long-range rocket on 78 minutes. Despite the revival, however, Sir Alex opted to withdraw Edwin van der Sar and Ryan Giggs, with Tomasz Kuszczak and Danny Simpson given a chance to impress.

There could have been even more goals in the final 10 minutes, but in the end United ran out 4-2 winners after a thrilling, open-ended 90 minutes that gives United every opportunity to secure passage into the knockout stages when the Ukrainians arrive at Old Trafford next month.

Edwin eyes early qualification

Edwin van der Sar wants United to take a step closer to the Champions League knockout stages with victory over Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday. But the Reds goalkeeper insists United are not underestimating their Group F opponents.

After two 1-0 wins over Sporting Lisbon and AS Roma, the Reds are in a commanding position to finish top of the group. However, van der Sar is drawing on the experience of last season, when defeats to Celtic and FC Copenhagen left the Reds needing a result against Benfica in the final group match to qualify.

“Last season we started off well in the Champions League, but then we got ourselves in difficulty by losing twice and needing to win in the last game,” van der Sar said on the eve of the match.

“The first thing you want is to qualify and the second is to do it as quickly as possible. But we can’t underestimate the opposition.”

Dynamo Kyiv may have lost both their opening matches, but there are pitfalls in playing the Ukrainians at home.

“We know that it can be difficult on these nights,” adds Edwin. “The home crowd will be fanatical and there’s also the cold to contend with.

“We’ve watched the videos and had the analysis from the scouts and the coaching staff, but the games can sometimes be different. We want the best at United, and that means qualifying as quickly as we can.” Read more...

Troubled Saha is out again

The informed talk within Ukraine's football community this week is that Dynamo Kiev centre forward Sergei Rebrov will miss Tuesday night's visit of Manchester United through an injury that exists largely in his head. It is cruel talk about a man who has given his country so much but back in Manchester another troubled centre forward - United's Louis Saha - must be aware that he, too, must soon prove to a sceptical public that he has the mental fortitude to succeed at the highest level. Saha is again missing from Sir Alex Ferguson's squad - a knee injury causing his withdrawal on this occasion - and the pattern of the France international's behaviour is becoming depressingly familiar. Optimistic words from his manager follow each comeback. Each return is then promptly aborted.

Tevez worth the wait

In-from Carlos Tevez has proved to Sir Alex Ferguson that the months of drawn out negotiations to bring him to the club were well worth it.

The Argentina striker’s effervescent attitude alone has already won him the affections of United’s supporters. At training on the Olympic Stadium pitch on Monday night, Tevez was tearing around the pitch fighting for every ball.

But it’s not just his attitude and approach that have impressed Sir Alex. Not only has his form on the pitch been hugely impressive in recent weeks, it appears there is more to come from the 23-year-old.

“His performances have been very, very good,” said Sir Alex.

“It’s always a test for any player coming to United, but Carlos has given his own answer to that challenge in the way that he has played.

“We’ve been delighted with the lad. His attitude in the matches and in training has been excellent and we are very lucky to have him.”

The talk of late has been of how well the Argentina striker has been combining with Wayne Rooney. Although in essence they are similar players, their growing understanding of each other’s movement is a pleasing sight for Sir Alex.

"All the evidence suggests they can form a really good partnership," said the Reds boss.

"We've had some fantastic partnerships at the club over the years and most of them took time to develop, apart from Cole and Yorke, who were terrific in their first season.

"Wayne is 22 this week and Carlos is 23, so both are young. They're showing great understanding already, but hopefully in three or four years' time we'll see something really special.

"Both have great attributes as strikers. Courage, speed, the ability to beat men, all those things are there.

"But maturity is the key. Once we see that, they will have greater authority and better timing in their game. Hopefully they'll still be at this club then and people will see what really special players they are.

“We hope they develop as a partnership and just get better. The signs are very good at the moment.” Read more...

Scholes misses Kyiv clash

Scholes misses Kyiv clash

United have suffered a blow in the build-up to the Champions League match against Dynamo Kiev with Paul Scholes being ruled out through injury.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the news in an exclusive interview with MUTV.

“Paul Scholes will miss the match, he picked up a knee injury in training," the boss revealed.

"He will be scanned when we get home. It’s unfortunate but these things happen. I’m confident we’ve got enough experience to cope tonight."

MUTV broke the news in their 2pm news bulletin on Tuesday. It comes at a bad time for United with Scholes' fellow central midfielders Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves also sidelined with injuries.

However, Darren Fletcher returned to action with Scotland last week and could deputise for Scholes against the Ukrainians. Read more...

Rooney form impresses Rio

Rio Ferdinand believes Wayne Rooney's current form is ominous for United's European and domestic rivals.

Rooney, who turns 22 on Wednesday, was in irresistible form against Aston Villa, scoring twice as the Reds warmed up in style for their Champions League clash in Kyiv.

Ferdinand said: "To me he's a fantastic footballer and it's great to have him in our team. When he's in form like that, he's almost unstoppable.

"I think he and Carlos (Tevez) put to bed all the question marks as to whether they can play together. Their movement was fantastic and I don’t think Villa could live with them."

Rooney's brace at Villa Park demonstrated his ability to bounce back from England's damaging defeat in Russia, in which he had also scored.

"The disappointment with England wasn’t going to affect his performance,” Rio said.

“Top players do that - you have disappointments throughout your career but it’s how you respond to those setbacks. He’s showed that he’s in good spirits.”

Rooney's partnership with Carlos Tevez is beginning to earn rave reviews, now the latter has settled into life at Old Trafford.

"Carlos has been in England for a while but you’ve got to give these guys time," said Rio, also referring to Nani and Anderson.

“People forget they’re only young. Anderson’s only 19 but he's a fantastic footballer. He's working hard with the fitness coach and you’re seeing the fruits of that now.” Read more...

Dynamo Kiev Vs. Manchester United Match Preview

Dynamo Kiev coach Josef Szabo is taking a cautious approach to Tuesday's Champions League clash with Manchester United. The veteran coach, who took over at the helm for the fourth time last month, acknowledges overcoming Sir Alex Ferguson's men will not be easy but insists his team will not be overawed by the occasion. He told the pre-match press conference: ``They United have proved in their play that they are one of the best teams in the world and led by one of the best and most stable bosses around.

``To say that we will definitely go out and win against them would be silly. ``But as the saying goes, `if you are afraid of wolves, then don't go in the forest'. ``When going out onto the field of play, you cannot be afraid. ``There will be butterflies, I can't deny, but after the warm-up those nerves disappear. ``I don't think we should fear Manchester United. It's possible to play against the English. You just have to show character.

``Against English clubs you have to play with the utmost caution - one mistake can cause big problems. ``Therefore, above all else, I'll be calling for extreme caution from my players.'' Dynamo have lost their opening two Group F matches and need to avoid defeat against the English champions if they are going to keep any dreams of qualification for the next stage alive.

Defender Andriy Nesmachny is fully aware that a loss would spell the end of his side's hopes. ``If we are defeated, then we lose all hope of progressing from the group,'' he said. ``The lads are built up to beat Manchester United, to find the key that will unlock our opponents and earn three points. ``That's going to be very important for us.''

Dynamo have been boosted by news that Brazilian Michael looks set to return up front after missing the 2-1 defeat to Sporting Lisbon, but former Tottenham striker Sergei Rebrov is still nursing an injury and will miss Tuesday's game. There is also a question mark over the participation of midfielder Taras Mikhalik because of an ankle injury.

Despite some shaky performances of late for both club and country, veteran goalkeeper Aleksandr Shovkovsky is expected to keep his place in goal. United, meanwhile, will be looking to maintain their 100% start to Group F in the Ukrainian capital. Ferguson feels Wayne Rooney's fledgling strike partnership with Carlos Tevez bears all the hallmarks matching the deeds of Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke.

Although many pundits felt Rooney and Tevez were too alike to forge an effective union, their two games together so far suggest otherwise. Four goals against Wigan immediately before the international break and another four at Aston Villa straight afterwards have quelled all talk of the Red Devils' early-season scoring struggles.

Ferguson is now preparing to let Rooney and Tevez loose on the European stage for the first time in the Olympic Stadium. ``We have had some fantastic partnerships at this club over the years,'' said Ferguson. ``The first season with Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke was incredible but most of them do take time. ``What you have to remember is that Wayne is 22 next week and Carlos is only 23, so they are only young players.

In three or four years it might be something special. ``Both have great attributes. They have speed and courage and they are able to beat a man, so all the things are there.'' Nemanja Vidic is in line for a recall after missing Saturday's win at Villa following concussion. Cristiano Ronaldo will play after sitting out the four-goal rout at Villa Park, with countryman Nani most likely to stand down. Read more...

Vidic will face Kyiv

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Nemanja Vidic will play against Dynamo Kyiv as United look to continue their 100% record in this season's Champions League.

The Serb has been suffering the after-effects of concussion sustained against Wigan at the start of October, but the United manager told a press conference on Monday that Vidic will feature against the Ukrainian champions.

Sir Alex said: "There won't be many changes from Saturday. Vidic will come in and we may make one other change, but that's all."

It is likely that Gerard Pique will make way at the Olympiyskiy Stadium, allowing Vidic and Rio Ferdinand to resume their partnership at the heart of the United defence.

Tevez-Rooney show is a big hit

If strikers Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney are not a good partnership then it must be said that Morecambe and Wise were not funny. Before Aston Villa had two players sent off to unbalance a decent match, Tevez and Rooney had cut them apart with intelligence and skill. “The performance was absolutely superb,” said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. “Our best of the season.” He has been told that Rooney and Tevez were too similar, that it would not work. Well, he was right, we were wrong. Rio Ferdinand said of the Tevez and Rooney double act: "Today the myth about Tevez and Rooney not being able to play together was put to bed. We knew that as a team but they put it on show and their movement and awareness around each other was unbelievable."

Sir Alex's tactical dilemma

Sir Alex Ferguson is pondering whether to stick with the burgeoning strike partnership of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez or go with a three-man central midfield in Kyiv on Tuesday night.

In plummeting temperatures in the Ukrainian capital, the United boss oversaw training at the Olympic Stadium, in which he was buoyed by the sight of a fit Nemanja Vidic taking part in the full training session.

But he has a selection dilemma further up the field. Rooney, who scored twice against Aston Villa at the weekend, proved his partnership with Tevez is starting to click.

Sir Alex has already stated that he believes Dynamo Kyiv – yet to pick up any points in Group F so far – have no option but to attack the Reds. The decision now is how best to counter Dynamo's approach; whether to meet the Ukrainians with the Tevez-Rooney axis that is performing so well domestically, or revert to the lone striker with three central midfielders used against Sporting Lisbon.

“In Tevez and Rooney we have too exceptionally good footballers,” the manager said at his pre-match press conference in Kyiv. “They are both such strong players and a real threat to defenders.

“It makes them a real consideration for tomorrow, their form is good enough,” he added. “There is the tactical part to consider.

“I would have liked to have had Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves here. They are ideal European players. We don’t have either of them, but we have good options. There’s Paul Scholes, Anderson, Darren Fletcher and John O’Shea.

“We may go with three players in the middle, as we did in Lisbon. That is certainly a possibility. Whatever we do, the intention will be to try and win the match because the rewards are great for us.

“It’s an important game for Kyiv. They will be wanting to win the match and I expect them to have a go. We see it as an opportunity for us because Roma and Sporting Lisbon have a double header against each other.

"From our point of view you would hope they take points off each other. If we can win our games against Dynamo Kyiv then it puts us in a strong position [to win the group].

“The best thing to do is to try and approach the game trying to win it. And that is exactly what we will be doing.” Read more...

Aston Villa Vs. Manchester United Post Match Talk

Sir Alex Ferguson believes United's forwards have really hit form after the Reds scored four goals for the second game running.

Speaking after United demolished Aston Villa 4-1 in their "best performance of the season", the boss acknowledged it had taken a while for his forward line to click into gear.

"I think there's been a disappointment that we haven't scored more goals," said Sir Alex.

"That's a big surprise considering the players we have but Tevez and Anderson missed pre-season so it took them a while to get the fitness needed at this level. Rooney missed the first four games of the season and Ronaldo was suspended, so it's understandable."

Sir Alex believes the goal-shy start to the campaign is well and truly behind United.

"We are delighted, the performance in particular was absolutely superb and I think it's probably our best of the season," he said.

Villa were reduced to nine men when midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker and goalkeeper Scott Carson were sent off. Sir Alex backed both decisions by referee Rob Styles but denied they were decisive moments in the game.

"I don’t think the red cards made a difference to the scoreline but they did give us an easier task. Reo-Coker was unlucky, but he committed two bookable offences as they were both late tackles. You can't afford to do that in the modern game.

"As for Carson being sent off (for bringing down Tevez), there is a lot of sympathy in that situation but the letter of the law says he has to go." Read more...

Aston Villa Vs. Manchester United Result and Report

United’s excellent form at Villa Park continued with a 4-1 victory characterised by the passing, movement, vision of the Reds' blossoming strike pairing, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez.

Rooney scored twice, but could have scored double that after seeing a penalty saved and a shot rattle off the crossbar. Tevez was as tenacious as ever but, more importantly, his link-up play crucial to the Reds going forward. Villa, who took the lead through Gabriel Agbonlahor on 13 minutes, ended the match with nine men after Nigel Reo-Coker and Scott Carson both saw red. In truth the match was all but over after United’s three-goal blitz before the break.

Without Vidic, Saha, Hargreaves, Carrick Neville, and with Ronaldo on the bench after suffering a slight knock on international duty, Sir Alex was forced to reshuffle. Anderson was handed only his second league start, while Gerard Pique deputised at right-back as Wes Brown filled in for Vidic.

It took two minutes for United to get the first chance when Scott Carson picked up a backpass from Wilfred Bouma 12 yards out. Rooney teed up Ryan Giggs on the volley, but the Villa wall blocked the effort. A promising start. But Martin O’Neill's side are made of stern stuff and, in contrast to the early run of play, they managed to strike first. Ashley Young’s cross from the left found Agbonlahor with time to glance his header past Edwin van der Sar. There was a hint of offside, as Luke Moore appeared to block van der Sar’s line of sight. But the goal stood.

Undeterred, United piled on the pressure, and chances soon followed. Evra’s cross from the left allowed Rooney to nod the ball back to Nani, who volleyed just over. Then after 25 minutes United’s intricate passing found a way through. Anderson, Nani, Scholes opened up space for Tevez, whose one-two with Rooney put him through on goal. But Carson was quick off his line and saved with his legs.

The Reds deservedly pulled level after 36 minutes following a low and dangerous Nani cross from the right. It caused indecision in the Villa defence. Zat Knight seemed to think Carson was coming to collect, but also knew that the slightest of touches would send the ball into his own net. Rooney gladly capitalised, nipping in behind Knight and tapping home the equaliser.

The understanding between Rooney and Tevez was the signature of United's first-half performance. Tevez drops under the radar of opposition defences, and he caused all kinds of problems for Villa's defence. Charged with linking midfield with attack, he executed the task perfectly for United’s second goal on 45 minutes. Using Giggs’ run as a decoy, the Argentina international cut inside from the left and carved Villa’s defence wide open with a pass to Rooney. United’s no.10 coolly slotted home his second of the match. It was the perfect time to take the lead. But Sir Alex’s men weren’t finished there. From a corner in injury time, Pique had his header cleared off the line before Craig Gardner volleyed Ferdinand’s rebounded shot in off the bar. It was a dramatic, but utterly deserved, turnaround.

The odds were further stacked in United’s favour during a five-minute spell around the hour mark. First, Rob Styles, perhaps slightly harshly, sent off Nigel Reo-Coker, whose two bookable offences comprised clumsy rather than malicious tackles on Anderson and Tevez. Then, after Tevez was brought down by Carson whilst clean through on goal, he dismissed the Villa shot-stopper and awarded a penalty. However, substitute goalkeeper Stuart Taylor made the most of his first touch, saving low and to his right from Rooney’s spot-kick. The English front man’s hat-trick was proving elusive, seconds later he smashed a shot from 12 yards against the bar.

Tevez, who deserved a goal for his efforts, should have scored shortly before being replaced after 73 minutes by Darren Fletcher. He found space in the box and had just Taylor to beat, but the Villa goalkeeper spread himself well to deny Tevez. Taylor would be beaten, however, albeit via a wicked deflection. Giggs danced through the Villa defence from the right flank before seeing his left-footed shot cannon off Martin Laursen and beyond Taylor to complete the win. Villa Park remains one of United’s favoured grounds on the Premier League circuit, and a performance of this quality so soon after an international break bodes well.

Keeper Van der Sar eyes Man Utd return

Edwin van der Sar is fit and ready to return for Manchester United at Aston Villa on Saturday.

The veteran Dutch keeper has missed United's last two games with a toe injury picked up during the Premier League win at Birmingham last month.

Although the 36-year-old was named in the Holland squad by Marco van Basten for the Euro 2008 double-header with Romania and Slovakia, he was forced to withdraw, sparking fears he might be missing for longer than most people at Old Trafford had anticipated.

However, Van der Sar has confirmed he is now 100% again and should replace Tomasz Kuszczak at Villa Park as United look to extend a six-match winning sequence in the Premier League which has been achieved without conceding a goal.

'I feel good,' he said.

'I went away with the national team last week because I felt I could have played on the Saturday.

'Unfortunately, the progress was not quick enough. There was no point in taking a risk and aggravating it, so I decided not to play and focus on tomorrow's game instead.'

Although Van der Sar has been fortunate to avoid serious injuries during his illustrious career, he has been struck down by a couple of minor problems since joining United, including a calf injury and a broken nose sustained in a collision with Robbie Keane at Tottenham.

However, the former Ajax star has no lingering fears and confirms he wants to stay fit in order to avoid extra work during recovery.

'I am not worried about my foot because overall, I have not had many injuries,' he said.

'It is strange to go a couple of weeks without playing, so I am looking forward to being involved again.

'When you are injured you have to work harder than when you are fit. That is why everyone wants to get back as quickly as possible and feel part of the team.' Read more...

Ferguson expects his England stars to shine

Sir Alex Ferguson is backing his fallen stars to recover from their international disappointments by firing Manchester United to victory at Aston Villa on Saturday.

John O'Shea and Darren Fletcher were both left frustrated by poor results for the Republic of Ireland and Scotland respectively but it is England duo Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand who suffered the most.

Both are facing the dismal prospect of an unexpected summer off as England struggle to reach Euro 2008, a scenario that would almost certainly see the dismissal of Ferguson's former assistant Steve McClaren after just 18 games in charge.

But the United boss has felt no need to throw a protective arm around his charges.

After seeing so many players experience the same emotions during his two decades at Old Trafford, Ferguson is happy to let the nature of the game take care of the problem.

'They are grown men and they are big men, they have to be able to deal with it,' said the Scot.

'There have been a few disappointments, with Scotland, Ireland and England. But the situation is nothing unusual and I have not spoken to them about it.

'The beauty of football is that you always have the next game in which to rectify what happened in the last one. Sometimes it is seven days, sometimes it is four. But it means you can always get over these things quickly.'

Ferguson sees no reason why this weekend should not provide instant relief.

While United's next opponents have continued to improve under Martin O'Neill, Villa Park is one of the Red Devils happier hunting grounds.

It is 12 seasons since Ferguson last tasted a league defeat in August 1995 to the Midlands outfit, Villa's success drawing the famous `You'll never win anything with kids' response from Alan Hansen.

Ryan Giggs was not in the United line-up that day however, he was one of the youngsters Hansen was talking about, even though he had already won two league titles and an FA Cup by that stage.

Ferguson has certainly never had any cause to regret trusting that `Class of 92' and particularly Giggs, who this week signed a contract which will keep him at Old Trafford until 2009 and hopefully much longer, way beyond the end of his playing days, possibly in the type of ambassadorial role Sir Bobby Charlton has at present.

'Without doubt, Ryan is still a big influence in the dressing room,' said Ferguson.

'He sets a tremendous example and I hope he stays here a lot longer.

'He has never shown any inclination to go into coaching but he certainly has a role to play once he has finished because we need to recognise the deeds of our great players.'

Giggs' presence will be required on the field tomorrow as United look to maintain a six-match winning streak during which time they have not conceded a goal.

The run has allowed Ferguson's team to keep pace with early table-toppers Arsenal, who they meet at the Emirates Stadium on November 3.

Some pundits have suggested Arsenal are too raw and inexperienced to last the pace this season, feeling United, Liverpool and Chelsea will eventually emerge as the major championship contenders.

Ferguson disputes that theory. He only has to look back 12 months to find similar opinions being expressed about his own side, who went on to win the title in such glorious fashion.

'It is still an open race but Arsenal have had a great start and they are the ones we are chasing at the moment,' said Ferguson.

'I know challenging for a title is a new experience for a lot of their players but some of them have been there before and the manager has, which is a help.

'People said the same thing about us last year but we led the league for three-quarters of the season, so I don't think it is a handicap.

'The main thing is I know we will chase them with great fervour and determination.

'Our team is coming together now. We are getting on with the business of winning games and hopefully we can continue to do that now.' Read more...

Boss hopes for birthday boy Vida

Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping to make Nemanja Vidic's birthday weekend by declaring him fit to face Aston Villa, while Edwin van der Sar has confirmed he could play.

Vidic, 26 on Sunday, was withdrawn from the Wigan game a fortnight ago after just 21 minutes, and he has since missed Serbia's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Armenia and Azerbaijan. However, the big defender could now return to action in United's trip to the Midlands.

“We don’t have many changes from Wigan. I’m hoping that Vida will be ready,” said the boss at his pre-match press conference.

Van der Sar limped off with a toe injury against Birmingham City, but he is also expected to return at Villa Park. However, the Reds are still without Owen Hargreaves, Gary Neville and Louis Saha. The Frenchman is still troubled by a knee injury, although he could make Tuesday's Champions League match with Dynamo Kyiv.

"Owen isn't ready," said the boss. "We've had to follow the procedures laid out by the doctor that gave him the injection, and part of that means he won't play against Aston Villa. I think after next Saturday (Middlesbrough) we'll be talking about him getting close then.

"Gary is doing very well," he added. "We've already had a few practice matches for him and we're trying to organise another for Wednesday to bring him on a bit. He's very close now. There was no set-back [when he missed the Liverpool Reserve game], it was too early."

Sir Alex happily had no new injuries to report as Rooney, Ferdinand, Ronaldo, Nani, Fletcher and O'Shea all returned fit after playing for their countries in midweek. Read more...

Giggs benefits from break

While the majority of his team-mates have been on international duty since United's win over Wigan, Ryan Giggs goes into this weekend's trip to Aston Villa with some valuable rest under his belt.

The 33-year-old former Welsh skipper, who retired from international football earlier this year, has been training at Carrington for the last fortnight.

Giggs claims that he is already begin to reap dividends from his decision to call time on his international career.

“It was a big decision," Giggs told MUTV.

"I said at the time I hoped it would prolong my United career and even though I’ve only missed a couple of internationals, I feel I’ve benefited already.

"I’ve done really good training this week and during the last international break as well so hopefully it will prolong my career. I’m feeling the benefits, definitely." Read more...

Eagles Eager for More

Chris Eagles hopes to have made a strong enough early-season impression to remain a part of Sir Alex Ferguson's plans for the rest of the campaign.

Eagles played himself into Sir Alex's senior scene after greatly improving his game in the last 18 months, following loans with Watford and NEC Nijmegen.

The young winger has made five senior appearances so far this term but, with United's injury worries gradually clearing up, he is realistic about his chances of getting such regular look-ins in the coming months.

"The gaffer has his starting eleven and the subs will no doubt be other first team players because they’ve got the experience," Eagles told ManUtd.com.

"But the more we’re involved the more it will change round and the players that aren’t performing will drop down. That’s the way it’s always been at this club.

"The longer we’re here and involved hopefully we’ll be nearer the top of that pecking order."

Tevez's double

Carlos Tevez's younger brother Miguel has joined Manchester United on a 2½-year deal. Miguel Tevez impressed on his two-week trial at Old Trafford during the international break. Miguel, 17, was brought to boss Alex Ferguson’s attention by his assistant Carlos Queiroz. The midfielder began his career with Argentine side Boca Juniors - his brother’s first club.

Phil catches Robbo's eye

Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson is confident that loan signing Phil Bardsley will be a sound addition to his squad.

The Blades have struggled in the Championship after their controversial relegation from the top flight last term, but Robbo is hopeful that Bardsley bring solidity to his side's backline.

"Phil is a good pro and has come here to perform," Robson told the official Sheffield United website.

"I am confident he will do a good job for us and we are always looking to improve the squad. He also has experience out on-loan after spells at Burnley, Rangers and Aston Villa."

Bardsley has found first team openings limited at Old Trafford, but has already caught his new manager's eye in his short time training with the Blades.

Robson said: "He's fitted in with the lads straight away and he goes straight into contention for Saturday.

"It's important for me that Phil brings the right balance to the back four. He is a specialised full-back and that creates a more defensive sound unit."

Owen pushing for return

Owen Hargreaves hopes to finally resume his promising start to life with United against Aston Villa this weekend.

Injuries have restricted the England midfielder to just three appearances since joining from Bayern Munich, but he hopes to finally make his return at Villa Park.

"I hope this is it for me injury-wise. I have missed enough games," Hargreaves told The Sun.

"I've been involved with football for quite a while and know injuries are part of the game, but I've tried to take more precautions as I've got older."

Owen has been out of action with tendonitis since facing Sunderland at the start of September, but an injection in his knee has been widely regarded as a success, hopefully clearing a path for his return.

And, with Michael Carrick still missing with a fractured elbow, Hargreaves' return would be a timely one as United aim to extend a six-game Premier League winning streak.

Knight: United in for a fight

Zat Knight has warned Manchester United they will be in for a shock when they visit Aston Villa. The defender reckons Martin O'Neill's men are turning Villa Park into a fortress and that they can see off United in the same way they shocked Chelsea. Knight said: "We can get something out of the game and hope to create another upset, like we did against Chelsea a few weeks ago. United are in good form at the moment but they are beatable. We just have to hope we can catch them on a bad day. Playing it at our ground will help as well, as we are trying to turn Villa Park into a fortress."

Giggs still looking ahead

Having only just penned a new one-year contract extension, Ryan Giggs is already looking to further prolong his stay at Old Trafford.

The veteran winger, who turns 34 next month, has extended his current deal until June 2009, and is hoping to play his way into a further elongation next season and beyond.

"We said a couple of years ago when I signed the last contract that we’d look at it year by year which is what we’ve done," Giggs told MUTV immediately after signing his new deal.

"I’m obviously delighted to get it sorted out. I can just concentrate on the football now. I had just under a year to go and now I’ve signed a year’s extension. Hopefully there will be a couple more."

Giggs made his United debut in 1991, but he insists his appetite for the game has not diminished despite over 16 years of sustained success.

"I think a lot’s changed in 16 years," he said. "But I’m enjoying more football more than ever. The nearer you get to the end, you try and enjoy it as much as you can. At 18 or 19, you think it’s going to go on forever and obviously it doesn’t.

"I’m enjoying it, we’ve got a great team at the moment. Obviously winning the Premier League last year was a great buzz for everyone and hopefully we can do it again.

"I feel as fit as ever and I’m enjoying it as much as ever as I’ve just said so hopefully I can go on a bit longer."

Gill salutes a loyal legend

After securing a deal to take Ryan Giggs into his second decade at Old Trafford, Chief Executive David Gill admits the veteran winger should be regarded as a club legend in years to come.

In addition to Giggs' sustained on-field brilliance, Gill was keen to note the Welshman's influence as a role model during his trophy-laden time at Old Trafford - a combination which ensures he is held in the highest regard throughout football.

“You would have thought (he will be regarded as a legend) for his trophy haul, and his 727 games already under his belt with many more to come," Gill told MUTV. "But it’s not only for what he’s achieved, it’s also how he’s achieved it.

"Quite rightly he’s got respect throughout the game, not only in this country but around the world. He clearly excites fans all over the globe with the way he plays the game but also I think everyone can recognise he is a true gentleman, a true ambassador for this great game and this great club.

"I think in the modern-day game, someone who’s loyal to the club, plays from being a junior right through to senior ranks, he’s won 18 trophies and he’s done it all - it’s very important. I’m sure through Ryan a lot of knowledge and information is passed down through the ranks which is invaluable."

With both parties keen to extend Giggs' tenure at United, Gill admits negotiations were particularly easy - and he hopes that such talks take place many more times before the 33-year-old decides to call time on his glittering career.

“It wasn’t the most difficult of negotiations," revealed Gill. "Ryan’s been with us for many, many years, he’s a great player for this club and a great ambassador. We were delighted to secure his services until June 2009 at the earliest.

“As you can see, he’s fit, he looks after himself, he looks fantastic and we judge it by what he’s doing on the pitch for Manchester United and he’s clearly producing the goods week in, week out.

“I think Ryan recognises what the club has done for him – we’ve looked after him – but he’s clearly done fantastic things for the club. I think that loyalty is something that is quite rightly recognised within the club and with all our supporters around the world as a fantastic asset in the game today.

“We obviously want him to stay, to play and to contribute for many more years to come.”

Reds face fight at Villa

United will have a fight on their hands if they are to take three points from Aston Villa this weekend, according to Villans midfielder Craig Gardner.

Martin O'Neill's side have won four of their first five home matches this season - including a 2-0 triumph over Chelsea - and United face a hard task in extending their fine record at Villa Park.

"Villa Park isn't an easy place for teams to come," Gardner told the Birmingham Mail. "I'm sure Chelsea came here thinking they were going to get all three points and we won 2-0.

"Nobody will come here and stroll to the points. We'll give teams a game and we'll put up a fight. We've got that 'never say die' attitude now under Martin O'Neill.

"Even if we go 1-0 down, we have the character to bounce back and that's a good thing to have."

Gardner has been carrying a slight groin injury of late, but the England U21 international is desperate to be fit for United's visit.

"It's a game I really don't want to miss," he said. "Man U at home is one of the biggest, if not the biggest game of the season, so I'm determined to be fit and it would be nice to be a part of the team that plays against United.

"These are the games no player wants to miss. You want to go out there and perform in front of over 40,000 and you want to play against the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, Giggs - what more can you ask for?"

Giggs extends Reds deal

Manchester United is pleased to announce that Ryan Giggs has today extended his contract for a further season until the end of June 2009.

Ryan has 18 major titles to his name including 9 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and 1 European Cup. He made his United debut at Old Trafford on 2nd March 1991 against Everton and has played 727 matches to date - making him second only to Sir Bobby Charlton (759) in most appearances for the Club - and scored 141 goals.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “I am absolutely delighted that Ryan has signed for a further season. Ryan Giggs epitomises the word loyalty, he signed here as a 14-year old school boy and is still with the club 20 years on. Apart from his playing ability he has a fantastic demeanour and is a great role model to the younger players. I am sure he will be at the Club for a long time to come.”

Ryan Giggs said: “I am delighted to have signed for a further season. I am enjoying football more than ever and I hope to carry on playing football for Manchester United for as long as I can. I would like to thank Sir Alex, the fans and everyone at the Club for the great support I have received over the years.”

New deal for Edwin

Manchester United are set to open talks with Edwin van der Sar over a new one-year contract extension. The Dutch goalkeeper has been in excellent form this season, keeping seven successive clean sheets, and United are ready to reward his exemplary contribution. Despite being 36, United believe he can play on until May 2009 before eventually leaving Old Trafford. Van der Sar, who currently earns around £35,000 a week, will retire from international football with Holland after next summer's Euro Championships. That will free him to focus his attention fully on his commitments to United, who expect England keeper Ben Foster to emerge as his long-term replacement.

United are in Stevan heaven

United are on the brink of signing Partizan Belgrade wonderkid Stevan Jovetic for £7million. Sir Alex Ferguson has already made the huge bid for the 17-year-old Montenegro international. United’s bid is a massive one for a teenager but Jovetic is special and Ferguson is acting quickly to snap him up. The striker made his senior international debut in a friendly against Hungary last season. Jovetic has played 54 games for Partizan and bagged 18 goals, including six this season. Read more...

Rooney pitching for progress

Wayne Rooney is confident that England can seal Euro 2008 qualification with victory in Russia on Wednesday.

The United striker was part of the side that secured a goalless draw in similar circumstances against Turkey just over five years ago, and he is certain that England can overcome the hurdle of Russia's plastic pitch to book a place at next summer's finals.

"We know if we get three points then we’ve qualified," he said. "I’m sure it will be difficult and with a plastic pitch, we will not be used to it. But we won’t make excuses if we win or lose – we just need to do our job.

"It’s a similar situation to when we played Turkey a few years ago to qualify for the last European Championships. We went out there and did a job and I am confident we can do the same again."

Rooney scored his first competitive England goal since 2004 in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Estonia at Wembley, and the mercurial striker was predictably elated to be back on target.

"I’m delighted to score at any time, but it has been a long time," he said. "As a striker, if you don’t score, it does play on your mind a bit, but as long as we kept on winning I didn’t mind too much. I’m delighted to score, but I’m happier with the three points.”

Evra's history lesson

Patrice Evra has revealed he has immersed himself in books and DVDs to learn more about United's rich history.

The 26-year-old Frenchman has become Sir Alex Ferguson's first-choice left-back since joining from Monaco nearly two years ago. Evra says an important part of settling into his surroundings was learning about United's past.

"I joined a club that has such a strong identity so I had to learn it," he told France Football. "I watched many cassettes, DVDs of Eric Cantona and have translated a lot of books. Now when an ex-player shakes hands with me, I know who he is."

Ferbruary's 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash is on the horizon, and learning about the tragedy has given Evra a better understanding of the fabric of the club.

"[Learning about] the plane crash in 1958 moved me," he said. "When I take the plane with Bobby Charlton, I ask myself, ’how can he do it after what he has been through?’.

"I have more and more respect for this shirt. I advise everybody to be interested in his club, to identify yourself to it, it helped me." Read more...

'Lion' Tevez thanks Sir Alex

Carlos Tevez feels he is settling in to life at Old Trafford thanks to Sir Alex Ferguson and his team-mates making him feel at home.

Tevez has gradually settled into United's team and the 23-year-old is now proving a big hit with fans for being skilful and tenacious in equal measure. Goals against Chelsea and Wigan are merely confirmation of his arrival on the big stage.

"The help I've had from Sir Alex is very important," he told The Sun. "I know he has total belief in me and I'm very grateful to him. Sir Alex knows a lot about football and I'm learning from him. He makes me feel relaxed and valued."

The Reds boss described the Argentina striker as being "brave as a lion", but it isn't just his courageousness that has drawn such comparisons. "He called me a lion, and he's started doing it at training as well," revealed Tevez. "I turn up just after getting out of bed with my hair all messed up. And when my hair is like that, I look like a lion apparently!”

His team-mates have also provided inspiration on the pitch and support off it. "When I look around the dressing room and see my team-mates, I realise I'm at one of the most important clubs in the world,” he added. “That's a dream come true.

"The most surprising thing about the squad is even though all the players are stars, they're all really humble and good people. I've now got various friends in the squad like Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. I'm doing quite well with my English now. I understand the boss and my team-mates perfectly." Read more...

Tevez ecstatic with life at Old Trafford

Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez has revealed the positive effect his team-mates have had on his game and that signing for Sir Alex Ferguson's side is a 'dream come true'.

Powered by: Insweb.com
The Argentina international moved to Old Trafford in the summer from West Ham where he took a long time to find his form after his surprise arrival in August 2006.

However, he has had no such problems adapting to life with the Red Devils and having a manager like Ferguson has contributed to that.

'The main difference between United and West Ham is that the coach believes in me at my new club,' Tevez told The Sun. 'I'm feeling physically stronger with every game. That makes me feel good and everything else, like scoring goals, comes as a result.

'When I look around the dressing room and see my team-mates there, I realise I'm at one of the most important clubs in the world. That is a dream come true. The most surprising thing about the squad is even though all the players are stars, they are all actually really humble and are good people.

Edwin out of action

Edwin van der Sar is the latest confirmed casualty ahead of the next round of Euro 2008 qualifiers, with the Reds' goalkeeper pulling out of Holland's squad on Thursday.

Despite injuring his toe in United's 1-0 win at Birmingham City and missing the Reds' recent clashes with AS Roma and Wigan, van der Sar linked up with the Dutch national team earlier this week in the hope of being fit for Saturday's Group G meeting with Romania.

But the 36-year-old couldn't shake off the injury and will now focus his energies on making his United comeback at Villa Park on Saturday 20 October.

"This is a pity," Holland manager Marco van Basten told the Dutch press. "He is an important player, our captain." Read more...
